Exploring the Framework of Culturally Responsive Teaching

What is Culturally Responsive Teaching? And how can I implement it as a piano teacher? In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the pillars of Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) as defined by Dr. Geneva Gay, and will have the opportunity to explore each pillar through both personal reflection and group discussion. Participants will be given real life examples and walk away with resources to help guide their own implementation of CRT concepts in their studios.

As highly experienced pedagogues and conference presenters with over 50 years of combined teaching experience, DUO MUNDI GEORGE & GULI have developed workshops and lectures to audiences of all levels and will be giving a series of virtual and in person lecture-recitals for the Southeast Asia Piano Teachers Symposium, including Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand throughout their 2023-2024 concert season.

Connor Chee on Navajo Inspired Piano Music

Faber Piano Institute

Navajo pianist and composer Connor Chee is known for combining his classical piano training with his Native American heritage. Chee made his Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 12 after winning a gold medal in the World Piano Competition. Chee has released 4 studio albums of original pieces and piano transcriptions of Navajo music. The Navajo Piano won Best Instrumental Recording at the 16th Annual Native American Music Awards, and his piece “Beginnings” won Best New Age Song. He will be in Ann Arbor this week for the premiere of his newly commissioned Piano Etudes. His presentation will include a an overview of the cultural and spiritual traditions which inspire his compositions, along with selected performances. Open to the public.

The 2022 MMTA Conference will be a dynamic meeting at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo that will feature diverse and inspiring teaching talent. This conference will once again inspire, and gather us together to collaborate, network and learn from our colleagues.
