SUMMARY:Presentation: Clinton Pratt "Practice Makes Perfect?"
DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor Area Piano Teachers Guild is pleased to present Clinton Pratt from Cincinnati\, Ohio. \nRSVP here \nJoin with Google Meet: meet.google.com/ggs-yihj-hrb \n\nTeachers know that practicing is important. That’s how we improve! However\, we often neglect to ensure our students are actually practicing effectively and efficiently. We might tell them what to do and write it down\, but are they actually doing it at home? \nEven though teachers may know some good practice techniques\, they don’t always convey it in the right way to students\, making sure they actually understand what to do. \nI believe the main priority of lessons is to teach students how to practice. If they don’t know how to practice\, what’s the point? They will continue to come week after week with not much progress\, or worse: they are playing it wrong! \n  \nThis session will show teachers exactly how to ensure students are practicing efficiently and effectively on their own. In addition\, we will discuss what efficient and effective practice is. I will demonstrate step-by-step\, several practice techniques\, showing exactly how to help students develop excellent practice habits. \n  \nExamples include “1 plus 1”\, “3 in a row”\, practicing in bursts\, how to decide on sections to practice\, finding hand positions and fingering groupings\, and more. I will show how to practice tricky rhythms\, steady pulse\, balance\, voicing\, phrasing\, and difficult technical issues. \n  \nVideo clips from actual lessons will help give real world examples of these techniques in action\, and volunteers from the audience will come to the piano for live demonstrations! \n\nContact:  Ceren Su Sahin (cerensu@umich.edu)

SUMMARY:Presentation: Pride in Practice [RESCHEDULED]
DESCRIPTION:Pride in Practice: Fostering LGBTQ+ Inclusivity in the Music Studio\nRESCHEDULED FROM 11/20/25 \nPresenter: Barbie Wong \nEmbracing diversity within music education not only enriches the learning journey but also fosters a culture of empathy\, understanding\, and mutual respect among students. Because music has a profound ability to transform lives\, we will explore how to create a music studio environment that honors and validates the LGBTQ+ identities of every student. Led by Barbie Wong\, a dedicated LGBTQ+ advocate and parent to a transgender child\, this session has a treasure trove of best practices tailored specifically for music teachers. Dive deep into actionable strategies aimed at cultivating gender-inclusive studio spaces where every student feels seen\, heard\, and valued. \nYou will learn the intricate realm of language sensitivity\, including the art of pronoun usage\, and discover effective methods for integrating compositions by LGBTQ+ musicians into your teaching repertoire. In addition to addressing the importance of LGBTQ+ inclusivity\, we will highlight the practical benefits for teachers and students alike. Improved student engagement\, enhanced learning outcomes\, and the promotion of empathy and understanding will be discussed as key outcomes of embracing diversity within the music studio. Armed with tangible examples and practical insights\, you’ll not only be empowered to foster an inclusive music studio but also to uplift and affirm every student’s unique identity. \nThis presentation will be online. \nRSVP hereJoin with Google Meet: meet.google.com/opc-ihrw-zqw \nBarbie Wong\, a passionate music educator and speaker\, has worked with thousands of parents and teachers worldwide to ignite children’s love for music. SUMMARY:Exploring the Framework of Culturally Responsive Teaching
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the Framework of Culturally Responsive Teaching by Kasia Bielak-Hoops \nWhat is Culturally Responsive Teaching? And how can I implement it as a piano teacher? In this workshop\, participants will be introduced to the pillars of Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) as defined by Dr. Geneva Gay\, and will have the opportunity to explore each pillar through both personal reflection and group discussion. Participants will be given real life examples and walk away with resources to help guide their own implementation of CRT concepts in their studios.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Future of the Piano with Ergonomically Scaled Piano Keyboards (ESPK)
DESCRIPTION:The presentation will be held at the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance in Ann Arbor in room 1370.  Teachers may try out the pianos in room 1215 immediately following the presentation. \nExploring the Future of the Piano with Ergonomically Scaled Piano Keyboards (ESPK): A Study of Student Learning on ESPK \nThis presentation serves as a demonstration of the presenter’s recently completed DMA dissertation. It encompasses research data on pianists’ hand sizes sourced from different studies according to gender and level of professional attainment. More data on gender issues through the history of piano\, on competition winners according to gender\, and on the keyboard sizes of early pianos will be discussed. The collected hand span data of University of Michigan piano students will be examined with tables showing the injury rates\, and scarcity of small-handed pianists in this institution. Lastly\, the case study results of five small-handed pianists who practiced on smaller keyboards will be examined. The presentation includes video demonstrations that showcase specific passages played on different keyboard sizes by both small and large-handed pianists\, providing a valuable basis for comparison and analysis. \nCeren is a staff piano instructor at the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program at the University of Michigan. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Chopin and Improvisation with Mackenzie Pierce
DESCRIPTION:Chopin and Improvisation with Mackenzie Pierce \nThis talk will explore the role of improvisation in the musical culture of Chopin’s time\, with a special focus on the expectation that accomplished pianists would improvise preludes as introductions to\, or transitions between\, pieces (“preluding”). We will consider what traces of this improvisatory practice are audible in the Op. 28 preludes\, and we will ask how the nineteenth-century improvisatory practice of  preluding might inform present-day approaches to Chopin’s music. I hope this will open up a broader discussion about improvisation in the teaching of piano performance today. \nMackenzie Pierce is Assistant Professor of Musicology at the University of Michigan\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Embracing Fear: Performance Anxiety Symptoms & Management by Paola Savvidou
DESCRIPTION:Public performance is a vulnerable activity that needs just as much nurturing and guidance as learning the music to be performed. Our students must develop a variety of mental and emotional skills to prepare them for the experience of butterflies in their stomach\, trembling hands\, and jumpy thoughts. In this workshop\, we will learn the physiological\, mental\, and emotional symptoms of performance anxiety and explore practical strategies for helping our budding pianists convert their debilitating fear into powerful excitement.
